The central offering of Rhubarb Food Co-op is the weekly organic Mixed Box. As a group, we benefit by working together and paying cost price for bulk purchases.
Our ethos is fresh, organic, local, seasonal, low-waste, minimal food miles, minimal packaging… and delicious! The Mixed Box is the best possible selection of organic fruit and veg available at the time.
Each week, we put together a collection of 12-15 items in a ‘mixed’ Box, based upon what is available, what is particularly abundant and good, and what quantities we can buy for the allocated $40 per box.
We try as much as possible to consider family needs and include the basics such as carrots, zucchinis, potatoes, broccoli, onions, apples and citrus in good ratio with other fresh and gorgeous seasonal produce.
We strive for a balance of leafy greens, brassicas, root vegies, two to three fruits, as well as herbs, salad produce, beans, and monthly specials such as locally grown mushrooms. Good combinations are also a focus of the Mixed Box.
We have two main fruit and veg suppliers:
Back to Eden
Back to Eden is an organic wholesaler, based out of Homebush in Sydney’s western suburbs. Established over 20 years ago, Back to Eden is Australian owned and very well-respected. They enjoy long standing relationships with an Australian grower network of farmers and producers, which in turn gives us great access to the people who produce our food.
Eden Fanelli has expanded his father’s certified organic (ACO) farm at Mangrove Mountain to a large, diverse, market garden, which means that almost half of our box is grown within 90km from Barrett House! The climate in the hills behind Gosford is similar to Sydney, so Eden can grow citrus and leafy veg, as well as brassicas, right through winter.
